Waste Management of La. Expects Holiday Trash Cornucopia

Summary

Waste Management of Louisiana LLC expects a higher volume of household garbage and storm-related debris on the streets this Thanksgiving weekend. Waste Management asks residential customers to separate household garbage such as food, diapers and regular household waste from debris created by the storms and their aftermath. Customers should dispose of household garbage in trash containers or bags placed at the curb. Storm debris, including refrigerators, household appliances, bags of clothing, tree limbs, carpet and carpet padding, and wood fencing, should be placed in separate piles. Waste Management will collect household garbage according to its twice-weekly collection schedule.

The Thanksgiving holiday has one of the highest volumes of trash, said Rene Faucheux, Waste Management manager of municipal and community affairs in southeast Louisiana. With more residents and families returning to or working on their homes in the coming week, the company expects even greater volumes than normal holiday periods. We thank residents for their patience and willingness to separate their garbage and debris. Their work has allowed our Waste Management team members to collect the garbage in neighborhoods more quickly and safely, said Faucheux. Households are still producing an average of 100 pounds per week of household garbage since the storm, up drastically from the average of 45 pounds per week of household garbage prior to Hurricane Katrina. We ask that the public be patient with us as we deal with anticipated increases in the coming days. There may be isolated instances where Waste Management does not reach a street on its designated day. We pledge to reach that street starting the next morning.
