On Dec. 14, 1944, the Japanese herded 150 prisoners of war into trenches filled with gasoline outside a World War II prison camp on Palawan Island in the Philippines. Glenn McDole, who was among the trapped, said the Japanese then ignited the gasoline pit with torches and hand grenades.

As fellow soldiers burned to death, he and a small group of men dug their way out of the trench. McDole tumbled naked down a hill and hid in a pit of garbage for two days while the Japanese shot and bayoneted other survivors.
