New Orleans Public Schools have undergone drastic changes since Hurricane Katrina struck. With 84 flooded schools, the system's physical recovery was arduous and imperative in attempting to reclaim the 56,000 students who scattered across the country after the storm.

Even before Katrina, school officials were trying to determine the best way to deal with 124 district schools, many in a severe state of disrepair after years of neglect.
