New Orleans Unemployment Rate Jumps to 7.2 Percent

Summary


The unemployment rate in the New Orleans metropolitan statistical area increased to 7.2 percent in June from 6.4 percent in May, according to the Louisiana Department of Labor.

Total New Orleans civilian labor force employment increased from 404,498 to 411,955 but the number of unemployed increased from 27,518 in May to 32,198 in June. The June unemployment rate is also higher than the June 2005 rate of 6.1 percent when the labor force numbered 610,878 in New Orleans with an unemployment level of 39,521.
