City of New Orleans to Fund Saenger Theatre Overhaul

Summary

The city of New Orleans has reached a deal to repair the Saenger Theatre on Canal Street with plans to reopen the performance venue by 2011. The venue has been closed since Hurricane Katrina.

Mayor C. Ray Nagin signed an agreement with the Saenger's ownership Tuesday to start work this fall. Terms of the deal will put the property in city hands, allowing Saenger Theatre Partnership Ltd. to run the facility. Once it reopens, Saenger will pay the city a minimum of $100,000 a year in rent and $50,000 each year for major renovations.
