University of New Orleans Report: Bad Economic News Clouds Real Estate Market

Summary


Real estate research from the University of New Orleans shows home sales in the 10-parish region were improving and prices rose steadily through the first six months of the year. But all bets are off for the remainder of the year following a recent string of negative local economic news.

Ivan Miestchovich, director of UNO's Institute for Economic Development and Real Estate Research, said in his midyear 2010 housing market update that the "proverbial economic props" are being knocked out from under the market by the BP oil spill and ensuing drilling moratorium, the end of space shuttle tank construction at NASA's Michoud facility and Northrop Grumman's decision to close Avondale Shipyard.
