Summary


The 3,000 New Orleans City Hall employees laid off Tuesday could be dwarfed soon by terminations in the private sector, said Mark Drennen, president and CEO of Greater New Orleans Inc., an economic development organization serving 10 parishes.Drennen said to be prepared for mass layoffs by companies in the metro area if government funding does not provide relief soon.

The only way to prevent those layoffs would be federal appropriations, Drennen said.Private employers who can't return to business or normal operations have no revenue, which makes it impossible to maintain normal payroll, Drennen said.Drennen said a federal relief package being considered by the Senate Finance Committee in Washington, D.C., could save businesses on the brink.
