A member of the Louisiana Board of Elementary and Secondary Education said she is still optimistic about public education in New Orleans although schools face monumental challenges.

BESE Vice President Leslie Jacobs delivered the comments Wednesday at a luncheon meeting for the Horizon Initiative's education committee. The Horizon Initiative, a nonprofit trying to help the city recover from Hurricane Katrina, has been working closely with Jacobs on education for the past several months.
