First of Five Libraries Being Built in New Orleans Breaks Ground in Gentilly

Gentilly will be home to the first of five new libraries being built in New Orleans, with construction officially starting at 10 a.m. Tuesday for the Norman Mayer Library at 2098 Foy St.

The Gentilly branch, originally opened in 1949, was destroyed in flooding from levee breaches following Hurricane Katrina. After the Federal Emergency Management Agency declared the structure more than 50 percent damaged and eligible for full replacement, the city demolished the structure in February.
