Free Carnival parades are a main tourist lure, but krewe members also provide charitable contributions to the city, particularly since Hurricane Katrina.

Rex members, for example, began a concentrated effort to rebuild New Orleans just three weeks after Katrina by creating the Pro Bono Publico Foundation to consolidate their philanthropic efforts. They have since raised more than $30,000 to pay for overtime expenses of police officers during Mardi Gras.
