Report: New Orleans-Area Job Market Expected to Be Soft in 4q

Employers in the New Orleans-Metairie-Kenner Metropolitan Statistical Area expect to hire at a slow pace during the fourth quarter of 2009, according to a report released today. According to the Manpower Employment Outlook Survey, from October to December 13 percent of companies interviewed plan to hire more employees, while 15 percent expect to reduce their payrolls. Another 70 percent expect to maintain current staff levels and 2 percent are not certain of their hiring plans.

Fema Awards $8.4m to Replace Orleans Public School Contents

The Orleans Parish School Board is set to receive more than $8.4 million in federal funds to repair or replace contents damaged or lost during Hurricane Katrina. The funding is in the form of a consolidated Federal Emergency Management Agency grant. Prior to the grant, FEMA was funding the damages through 32 separate project worksheets.

Louisiana State Rep. Richmond to Run for Congress

State Rep. Cedric Richmond, D-New Orleans, said announced that he will run for the 2nd District seat held by Republican Congressman Anh "Joseph" Cao. Last year, Cao defeated then-indicted Congressman William Jefferson, the first black to represent Louisiana in Congress since Reconstruction and who held the post for nine terms.

New Orleans Businesses Find Pot of Gold at End of Southern Decadence Weekend

After two washouts in four years Southern Decadence was back on track in 2009 with one of its most heavily attended events ever. Official numbers have not been released but promoter Rip Naquin said attendance approached 100,000, which would meet pre-Katrina figures.

Price Fixing Allegations Create Rift Between Louisiana Shrimpers, Processors

Ewell Smith, executive director of the Louisiana Seafood Promotion and Marketing Board, believes that "crisis creates opportunity." The suffering Louisiana shrimp industry is waiting for the "opportunity" end of that equation. The crisis is a decade-long plummet in shrimp prices. And it has resulted in a feud between fishermen and shrimp processors whose cooperation, Smith said, is necessary to bring prices up.

Blackwater New Orleans Inks Lease Agreement for Storage Tanks

Blackwater Midstream Corp. announced that Blackwater New Orleans LLC, its wholly owned subsidiary, has reached a five-year deal with a new customer for the lease of three 50,000-barrel storage tanks under construction at its Westwego facility. Blackwater New Orleans acquired the Westwego facility Dec. 23 from NuStar Energy.
